Getting Started With the Right Equipment
Starting a forestry mulching business requires a significant equipment investment, but the right setup can have you profitable quickly. Here's what you need to know.
The Mulcher Head
The mulcher head is the business end of your operation. There are two main types:
- Drum-style mulchers: A rotating drum with fixed or swinging teeth. Best for high-volume clearing, handles larger trees well. Brands like Fecon, Rayco, and Denis Cimaf are popular.
- Disc-style mulchers: A spinning disc with cutting teeth. Generally faster on lighter material. FAE and Seppi make well-regarded disc mulchers.
The Carrier Machine
Your mulcher head needs something to carry it. Options include:
- Skid steer (50-100 HP): Lower cost entry point, good for small lots and residential work. Limited on larger timber.
- Compact track loader (75-120 HP): Better ground pressure than skid steers, good for soft or uneven terrain.
- Excavator (150-300+ HP): Maximum reach and power, handles the biggest jobs. Higher cost but can command premium rates.
- Dedicated mulching tractor (200-600 HP): Purpose-built machines like the Fecon FTX or Bandit Beast. Top of the line for production clearing.
Support Equipment
- Trailer: Heavy-duty lowboy or tilt trailer rated for your machine weight
- Truck: 1-ton or larger to pull your equipment
- Chainsaw: For trees too large for your mulcher or in tight spots
- Safety gear: Hard hat, chaps, ear protection, eye protection
- Spare teeth and parts: You'll go through mulcher teeth regularly
Total Investment
A basic startup setup (used skid steer + mulcher head + trailer + truck) can run $75,000 - $150,000. A mid-range setup with a track loader runs $150,000 - $300,000. A full-production setup with a dedicated mulching tractor can exceed $500,000.
Many operators start with a skid steer setup and upgrade as their business grows.
